UNDECIDED WHAT BOARD TO RENT?
KITE N’ SURF GOT YOUR BACK!

Although there are many ways of determining what size board you should use, there is only 1 model that is suitable for beginners and intermediate paddleboarders, an all-around board. Our paddleboards available for rental are 11’2 long and 32’’ very stable and they paddle fast at the same time. If you are a beginner the amount of time it takes for you to be able to stand and paddle will depend on your ability to balance as well as the conditions at the time.

When you try to stand on the board for the first time, you will feel a little wobbly, and as you become more comfortable, you will feel more stable. By taking SUP lessons or joining a SUP group, any flaws you may have in your technique should be ironed out, making balance a lot easier.

It is generally considered that a board that has twice your weight in kg of volume will be relatively stable. The all-around boards have between 260 liters of volume, making them extremely stable for most body types.

FIVE THINGS TO REMEMBER

SUP rental companies can be found throughout Zanzibar. Most of them are great, some are even good, but there are also some that don’t follow safety protocols to the letter. When you go out on the water for the first time, we want to give you some tips to keep in mind. You or someone you know may find these guidelines helpful.

  • Besides your board and paddle, you should also carry a leash and a life jacket before heading out on the water. Depending on the body of water you are paddling in, your board should always come with an appropriate leash for you to attach to either your ankle, calf or waist. By keeping yourself attached to the board, you can get back on it when you fall.
  • In order to make sure you are doing everything correctly, you should always ask the company to get on a board with you and paddle for a few minutes. They should show you how to stand up, paddle properly, and get back on your board safely after falling off.
  • If you ask the paddle board company for directions about where to paddle and any potential dangers in the water, they should be able to help you.
  • Beginners shouldn’t rent in high winds or if the wind is blowing off shore. The company should take you to a safer location if the wind speed is more than 12 mph.
  • Avoid highly populated swim areas or waterways. Even if you have a leash on, it is still possible for your board to strike and seriously injure someone nearby.

The paddleboard company should always be willing to get on a board and paddle with you for several minutes to make sure you are doing everything correctly.
