Zanzibar is an island engulfed with deep culture and history — a destination where you can find a place to divulge yourself with an escapade of a lifetime. Paje, which the locals call “Pearl of Zanzibar”, will amaze you with its overwhelming features alongside its thrilling adventures. Situated on the east coast of Zanzibar, Paje is fast becoming a tourist spot for water sports enthusiasts as it is perfect for water sports activities — one of which is Kitesurfing.

Kite Surfing

An extreme sport where one uses a large kite to be pulled on water. Well, nothing is more exciting than flying through a kite and gliding in the waves of the sea right? But contrary to what most people think, kitesurfing is not just for thrill-seekers and professional surfers. In fact, it’s a very safe sport that has become more popular around the world, regardless of age — from the kids, parents, doctors, and business owners to the random dude across the street. Everyone would like to try kitesurfing.

WHY KITESURF AT ZANZIBAR?

This island off the coast of Tanzania called “Spice Island” is not just famous for its exotic spices but there is also something more magical about this place. Aside from the stunning views and beautiful beaches, the area is also known for its world-class kitesurfing spots. Not to mention, you can also experience the Zanzibar safari tours on the island.

Zanzibar’s most popular kitesurfing spot is the east coast village of Paje. This area has been very popular with kitesurfers, owing to the best winds coming from December to March as well as June – September. There are large lagoons here that are perfect for beginners together with the endless reef which allows for some very enjoyable downwinders for more experienced kitesurfers.

The trade winds here are essentially two different ones. On summer days, the south-easterly onshore winds give kiters the perfect opportunity to traverse up to Paje and beyond (particularly for skilled riders), where the waters are relatively shallow and flat.

Now, during the summer season (Kuzi wind), winds blow south-easterly up to 25 knots. From there, it switches to a northerly wind (Kakazi wind) in winter, reaching a maximum speed of around 20 knots or more. Overall, the winds are predominantly siding onshore and pretty consistent!
